Mice in Truck

David, We have a 2013 Toyota Sequoia. It stays out on a property in the country. It started getting mice right away through the air intake behind and below the glove box. A common entryway I have learned.

We now have metal mesh over all intakes to prevent more mice, and I have paid another $240 to have the car detailed at a professional used car rehab place. Soon to have a special 1-2 hour air filtration “dry fog” treatment which is used to remove the smell of cigarette smoke from cars and is reported to be very successful. But this matter is organic, and IF there is still an undiscovered dead mouse somewhere in the dashboard’s vents or heater unit, then all this effort is for not - - - the odor will persist. Our good mechanic said it would take 10 hours and $800-1,000 to disassemble the dashboard completely to see IF a mouse might be there. It could be someplace else. So to do that and have the mechanic shrug at me at the end is not very palatable. So I have thought it might be nice to have a dog with a good nose to sniff out and help us find where this dead mouse might be. We could even do it AFTER the Dry Fog treatment so that most all other odors are removed except for this one persistent smell of mouse. I just have to find someone with a dog that we think could do it. HOWEVER - - - please give me your thoughts. I have that vehicle in Fort Worth, TX right now. The house where it stays is near Mineral Wells, TX and we have mice in that house and its walls as well, so that is my second problem. My priority is to get the dead mouse out of the vehicle and the vehicle secured so no more come in. I’ve done that first step with the metal mesh - - - I realize there might be other entryways available, but these we KNOW were those being used. Thanks for your feedback and referral...

My response: That's a tough case. If the mouse is too hard to access, you might have to wait for it to decompose fully, which might take about 10 days total before there is no more decomposing flesh, and then the odor will stop. I imagine that mouse-proofing a truck is very hard. I have no experience with such a project. You can call my local contact in Fort Worth if you'd like, but I can't guarantee that they'll be able to help with the truck. The house though, that should be no problem.
